NEWCASTLE - A SEASIDE CITY WITH A RICH TRADITION IN HOCKEY
Novocastrians are quite proud of their sporting traditions with its unique diversity of national and international quality representatives - playing, coaching and administering. This quality has been, and continues to be very evident in hockey with numerous representatives since hockey commenced in the city in the 1930s. a small sample from our hockey hall of fame includes Colleen Quinn, Chris Fernance, Ray Wright, Paul Dearing, Stewart Dearing.
Hockey for veterans ( over 40) commenced in 1980 and Newcastle is now one of the strongest areas in Australia for Masters hockey, and apart from the year-round mid-week competition, we field multiple teams in all age groups in the NSW State Masters Championships (34, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65 and 70). Players from Newcastle make up a large part of the NSW teams that are selected to compete in the annual Australian Championships.

For non-playing umpires who are approved by HNSW, we will cover your accommodation and will also pay $50 per game. Those umpires will be required to umpire two games on the Friday and two on the Saturday. HNSW appoints umpires (from the group that umpires on the Friday and Saturday)for the finals on the Sunday and will be responsible for paying them for the games on the Sunday. If a player is also chosen to umpire, we will not cover his accommodation, but will pay $50 per game for the four games.
Team managers - we will cover the accommodation of NON-PLAYING managers.
HNSW Annual Registration.
It is necessary to be registered with HNSW to play in the championships. or the Newcastle Men's Senior competition.
Please note that the Registration titled "Masters Only" allows a player who registers on that basis, to play in ONE state championships only per year. That type of registration does not qualify a player to play in a second state championships or to play in any other competition, such as our local masters competition, or the Newcastle Senior men's winter competition.
